Norris and McLaren Return to the Top Step
After ten rounds dominated by Mercedes (eight wins) and Ferrari (two), McLaren finally broke through at the Hungaroring. Lando Norris was in imperious form all weekend, capping a stunning Q3 lap with pole position before converting it into a race victory — albeit not without drama.
Norris lost the lead to team mate Oscar Piastri on the opening lap but fought back brilliantly, ultimately taking the win after Piastri's race ended with a gearbox failure following contact with Carlos Sainz's Williams. The upgraded MCL40 showed genuine pace, and Norris was effusive in his praise for the team's development effort.

Verstappen's Masterclass in Damage Limitation
Max Verstappen described his car as "completely broken" during qualifying, struggling with balance throughout. He provisionally qualified sixth before penalties for Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Antonelli gifted him a second-row start — and from there, the Dutchman did what he does best.
Verstappen snatched third from Charles Leclerc at the start, executed a clever double-pass in the pit stop phase to reclaim position from Hamilton, and managed his worn soft tyres expertly to the flag. Piastri's retirement promoted him to second — a remarkable result given the weekend's difficulties.
Team mate Isack Hadjar also played a supporting role, bunching up the pack to benefit Verstappen before going on to claim a second consecutive P6 — a strong haul for Red Bull heading into the break.
Antonelli Extends Championship Lead; Russell Suffers Again
Kimi Antonelli arrived in Hungary with the championship lead and left with it extended. Despite a grid penalty for a yellow flag infringement dropping him to P7, a well-executed alternative strategy saw him climb to P3 and bank valuable points.
For George Russell, it was another painful weekend. Anti-stall at the start dropped him to the back of the field, and while he recovered to P7, it was far from the result he needed after his Lap 1 retirement in Belgium the previous week.
Ferrari Fade After Promising Start
Ferrari showed early promise at the Hungaroring but ultimately couldn't sustain their pace through the race weekend. Leclerc lost third to Verstappen at the start and the Scuderia's challenge faded from there — a concerning sign heading into the summer break.
Championship Picture Heading into the Summer Break
With Hungary in the books, Antonelli leads the Drivers' Championship with a strengthened advantage. McLaren have announced themselves as genuine contenders with their first win of 2026, while Mercedes remain the benchmark on raw results. Ferrari and Red Bull will be looking to regroup before the second half of the season.
